Kohl King is an Indian-born mixed media artist based in South Florida. She studied at Brevard College in North Carolina, the University of Georgia (BFA), the Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Arts & Sciences, and the University of Arizona (MFA). King’s work explores the vulnerability of being alive amid the transience of time and a constantly changing world. Her practice is influenced by the ancient Indian sutra Tat Tvam Asi—‘I Am That’—which suggests that everything we perceive is an extension of the self. Her exhibitions include the Gallery of Contemporary and Indigenous Art in Arizona, the Tucson Museum of Art, the Torrance Museum of Art, Otis College of Art, West Los Angeles College, and Fellows of Contemporary Art (FOCA) in California. King is a professor of art at Broward College in Hollywood, Florida.
“My practice grows out of my need to understand the often conflicting parts of myself and how they connect to larger life experiences—a process shaped by being born in India and growing up across many places in the United States. I’m drawn to exploring intangible, vulnerable states of being: feelings that seem overwhelming, surreal, or impossible to hold, yet are simply part of living. I work across multiple mediums, using materials and subjects symbolically. Staying open to what emerges in the studio is essential; it helps me uncover my own truths and offers a sense of grounding.”
