HOLDING IT TOGETHER | 2014
In the Holding It Together series, I explored perfectionism, a trait that has challenged me most in daily life. This tendency developed over years of feeling compelled to over-function in a household affected by addiction. Each piece in this series was crafted in only a single session, with the duration dictated solely by my own mental and physical stamina. During these sessions, I carefully tore strips of heavy black tape, constructing three-dimensional forms that evolved from the flat black canvas. The results were spontaneous, arising naturally from the layering process. With time constraints in mind, I made quick decisions about each strip’s length, placement, and how to handle rough edges or loose fibers. I had to accept the outcomes in the work and in myself when I reached my own limits.
