KASHI | 2010
In early 2010, I returned to India through an artist residency, to a country I had left as a young child and had not returned to while growing up. I arrived expecting to make work, but found myself instead absorbed in looking. After so many years removed from the place of my birth, ordinary encounters—with domestic spaces, streets, transportation, people, rituals, and the rhythms of daily life—felt both familiar and unfamiliar. Over three months of traveling and living in Fort Kochi, Kerala, photography became a way of navigating that distance: observing a place to which I belonged by origin, but which I was encountering largely as a stranger.
