ALTER ALTAR | 2012

Alter Altar is a site-specific line drawing using Turmeric around the floor space of a central load-bearing pillar within the venue. Turmeric is a spice that is heavily used in Indian cooking as well as for medicinal purposes. Vibrant in color, it is also an effective dying agent.

During the course of the exhibition, visitors, often unconsciously, affected the work by their movements throughout the gallery while viewing other art displayed on the walls. The spice was stepped on, smeared, and tracked throughout the space--maybe even back to their homes, leaving a stain on both floor and shoes of the unaware participants.

DREAMS | 2012-2013

Dreams is a series of six sculptural sketches that attempt to give form to the intangible and the ephemeral qualities of dreams that I experience in an unpredictable, but reoccurring manner.

The material is a die cut foam rubber plane that is 6 ½” wide x ¼“ thick (lengths vary per piece). I wanted to work with a substance that is flexible and spongy, as dreams also have these properties. In addition, I chose to use the color of blue that is as close to color of the lines within a sheet of notebook paper. This color alludes to clear skies--a space of possibilities--a perfect ground for dreams to form.

In each sketch, the planes are cut in various ways to increase the surface area and length of the material while keeping it a single connected entity. The cut material is then scooped up and hung to allow air, space and light to become participating elements; thus playing with the notion of how to make any dream more expansive and dimensional. The result is an unpredictable form that can never be exactly repeated if taken down and reattempted. Yet, the very act of trying to regain the original structure, with each showing, permits the dreamer to move into the role of a conscious performer.
