I AM THAT

I Am That draws from the ancient Indian sutra Tat Tvam Asi (“You are That”), which I understand as a recognition of the self in others and the interconnectedness of self and environment.

I regard each work as a visual poem. Found and readily available materials are manipulated, layered, and juxtaposed to create reflections on shifting emotional states and encounters with the surrounding world. Each title begins with I Am That... and concludes with language that gives form to something otherwise intangible—as in I Am That...Broken Darkness. Together, the works consider the boundaries between inner experience and the world beyond the self.
