MILK & HONEY
Milk & Honey emerged from the dissolution of a long-term marriage and the loss of the imagined future attached to that union. The title invokes “milk and honey” as a metaphor for abundance and the promise of a better life—a promised land that remains perpetually somewhere ahead.
Each work is built upon a fragmented ground of hundreds of financial receipts accumulated during the marriage and originally saved for tax purposes. These records of what was “spent” become material evidence of years spent within the relationship. Layered and partially obscured, they form an uneven surface upon which lines of adhesive create an abstracted landscape.
Adhesives were chosen both for their function and for their colors, which reference milk and honey. Materials intended to bind instead attract, resist, merge, and repel one another, transforming the physical behavior of the materials into a meditation on intimacy, attachment, and separation.
